3

This is a First Draft Screenwriting Lab, hence you should apply with a feature film project that is early stages of development. You don't need to have a script while applying to the Lab. We just need the following during application:

  • Resume
  • Logline - A one-line description of your feature film idea
  • Synopsis - A one-pager describing the film's beginning, middle and end. (Don't worry, if you don't have the full story figured out).
  • Writers Statement - A short para on why do you want to make this feature film

Please see this link to know more about our submission requirements

1

Number of participants

30 upcoming filmmaker-writers will be chosen for the Lab.

2

Lab Program Design

The Lab is divided into 3 stages:

  • Stage 1 - Learning track - All 30 selected participants will attend the Learning Track, where they will learn the Fundamentals of Screenwriting. All 30 participants will develop their story structure, beatsheets, scene-breakdown and treatment for faculty and peer feedback.
  • Stage 2 - Development track - Only 10 participants will be selected out of 30 to graduate to the Development track, where they will work on the first-draft of their screenplays with the faculty. These 10 participants will be selected based on how well they develop the key aspects of their story in the learning track such as character, conflicts, resolutions etc. The faculty will decide the Top 10 participants for the Development track based on the submission materials of the Learning track - Character worksheet, Beatsheets, Scene Breakdown and Treatment.
  • Stage 3 - Pitching track - The final 10 participants will also be taught how to pitch their stories to the industry and will get the opportunity to present their stories at the online Pitchfest. The winners of the Lab will be selected from the final top 10 participants.

Please note: All 30 participants will not be developing their screenplays and only the the top 10 from the cohort who would have developed an in-depth understand of their stories, will be selected to graduate to the Development and Pitching track. In doing this, Writers INK's screenwriting pedagogy simulates a real-world screenwriting process, where students first flesh out the building blocks of their stories before diving into screenplay writing, resulting in a more productive way of developing stories.

Writers INK focuses on helping writers achieve a good first-draft of their screenplays to help them create a good portfolio and a writing sample to showcase their skill level to producers and other industry professionals. Most projects will continue to have a development journey even after this Lab at other Script development and mentorship Labs.
  • The Pitchfest organized by Writers INK helps simulate a real-world pitching and networking experience for upcoming writers and will give them a good exposure to the industry. But it should not be considered as Film Production Market, where projects will find producers because the projects will be at a nascent first-draft stage.
  • Guest sessions of the Lab are spread out over the course of the Lab and there can be last minute cancellations due to guest schedules.
  • The Writers INK Pitchfest has been attended by over 50 producers, however, we cannot guarantee this amount of attendance.
